DR KOO’S 5 WINTER SKIN TIPS

Winter weather sending you into a dry sensitive skin spiral? Dr. Koo can help straighten things out.
Dry sensitive skin that’s dull, irritated and itchy. That pretty much sums up winter skin. You can blame it on the outdoor (cold wind and chilly air) and indoor environment (dry heat and hot showers), which can send your skin into a dry sensitive skin spiral—stripping it of essential moisture and natural luminosity. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to rescue your dry sensitive skin from seasonal sabotage. Here are 5 tips on how to turn things around.
Cleanse with warm water

Hot water plus dry sensitive skin equals increased irritation. Try washing your face with lukewarm water to comfort your skin as you cleanse. Make sure your cleanser is formulated with skin-kind ingredients, like glycerides and ceramides, which help skin retain moisture. Consider taking it down a few degrees in the shower or tub, too.

Wear Sunscreen

You may not see the sun, but it sure sees you. Sunscreen is an essential part of your skincare routine, year round, whether you have dry sensitive skin or not. The sun’s rays are equally as damaging in the winter as they are in the summer, especially if there’s snow on the ground. Reflective surfaces, like snow and ice, can multiply your UV exposure.

Up Your Hydration

Go ahead and up your water intake in the winter, but even more important is upping the amount of moisturizer you apply. Your dry sensitive skin is most likely the result of moisture loss from wind, cold air and dry indoor heat. Using a rich moisturizer, like our Replenishing Cream, and spraying Hyaluronic Hydrating Myst as needed throughout the day has proven to help dry sensitive skin recover.

Use Retinol

You may gasp at the thought of using retinol on dry sensitive skin, but the truth is—your skin needs it. Retinol is known for boosting collagen and elastin to help smooth and firm skin, but it’s also a champ at speeding up cellular renewal. Retinol exfoliates dead, dry surface cells to reveal healthy new cells underneath. Retinol that’s pH optimized, like our 4 Levels, does not cause sensitivity so dry sensitive skin can use it nightly without fear of irritation.

Get Some Sleep

At night, while you’re sleeping, skin goes into repair mode, restoring and regenerating cells. This is the absolute best time to support your skin with products that contain vitamins A and C (the collagen boosters and cell renewers) to help rev-up repair and calm sensitivity associated with dry sensitive skin.
